Every wrestling fan should go through this article not to know John Cena but to know what wrestling is and how much passion one must have, to achieve such greatness that people take his name with the greats like Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, The Rock and Ric-Flair and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

John Felix Anthony Cena Junior, better known as an Actor, Rapper, Presenter and WWE superstar John Cena, Considered to be one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all-time, was born on April 23, 1977 in West Newbury, Massachusetts USA.

He is of Italian father John Cena and French-Canadian and English mother Carol Lupiens descent, and is the grandson of the famous baseball player Tony Lupien.

When he was in college, he played football and worked as a limousine driver. He decided to move to California in 1998, where he started training to become a bodybuilder but later jumped on wrestling business.

He joined a wrestling company named Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) in 1999 and soon signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) now known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2000 and till now working as the Face of the company.

His Childhood that can make any child to say “Wow”

Little Johnny was born with the umbilical cord wrapped three times around his neck, which was obviously an extremely scary situation, But thanks God Miraculously, Cena survived his difficult birth unscathed, not suffering any long-term effects.

However, John survived that fight in one piece and by extension, won his first battle in natural ring. “John Cena is a born fighter he is overcoming the odds since birth” said Mr. John Fabulous, Cena’s father.

Among five kids (all boys) John was the second-oldest son and on that time only source of televised entertainment was the pro wrestling in Cena family.

The Cena boys used to made makeshift rings in their basement out of mattresses, and battle for cardboard belts drawn by hands. The mastermind and Multi time champ of the Cena’s Basement Wrestling Federation was of course John Cena Jr.

John also got into body building in a very early age. Like, really early on. Just after being picked on at school when he was twelve years old he asked Santa for a weightlifting bench and he got it.

By the time Cena graduated from high school, he was massive in size and competing in bodybuilding contests in different local and state competitions.

Early Education of my Champ

His family is the believer of Catholicism and raised him as a catholic boy.  He attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts before transferring to Cushing Academy, a private preparatory boarding school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

The motto of Cushing Academy was “Educating the mind, shaping the character, and nurturing the character of young men and women.”

The rules and regulations were very tough and John not liked that but learn disciplinary life leading secrets. He then attended Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In college, he was an NCAA Division III All-American center on the college Football team and used to wear the number 54 Jersey, which is still used on some of his WWE merchandise.

In an interview Cena said that he had applied in 60 colleges and got offer from 58 colleges but he chose Springfield College because of the subject field he wanted to study was there, Exercise Psychology and Body Movement. He graduated from Springfield College in 1998 with a degree in Exercise Psychology and Body Movement.

Debut / Foray into Wrestling

For Cena, becoming a wrestler was not his core choice of career but of his father. His father, John Sr. (a.k.a. Johnny Fabulous), was a wrestling announcer and businessman and wanted to make at least one of his sons a successful wrestler.

As a kid, the younger Cena spent many hours in front of the television set to watch his wrestling heroes such as Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and Shawn Michaels smashing each other in the ring. Thus the seed of being a superstar rose into him.

Cena showed a passion for sports and work-out at an early age. When he was only 15, he was a regular gym freak. After graduating from high school and College, Cena headed for California in 1999, seeking a new life as a bodybuilder.

It wasn’t easy for the 6-foot 1-inch aspiring star to come across the country and settle down he had only $500 savings in his pocket. He even cleaned the toilets and folded the used towels at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach to earn his daily food. And because he didn’t have any place for sleeping, he used his 1991 Lincoln Continental as his apartment.

That fortunate time came in early 1999 when Cena had a conversation with a wrestler at Gold’s Gym who encouraged the gym employee to take classes at Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), a former World Wrestling Entertainment developmental company.

With the ring name “The Prototype,” the ambitious Cena captured the UPW title on April 27, 2000, in San Diego, California. Over the course of the next year, WWE executives turned their attention on him and signed a developmental contract in 2001 and included him as a core member in the company to work at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).

Entering WWE

As per the contract he got in 2001 he was able to compete in the developmental company of WWE named Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) here he became OVW heavyweight Champion (1 time) and OVW Southern Tag Team Champion with Rico Constantino.

Cena said his first WWF (Now WWE) appearance was actually a Smackdown dark match after the match, he asked William Regal what he thought about his match and Regal said in humor, “Well, lad, if you get a set of boots and tights, at least you’ll look like a wrestler.”

Cena misinterpreted Regal’s words thinking he was serious and bought 86 pairs of Boots and 128 pairs of trucks. Nothing is guaranteed in WWE. Vince McMahon (Chairmen) and Triple H (Chief Operating Officer) weren’t exactly big Cena fans early on though John becomes one of the biggest stars in history.

In fact, according to Cena’s interview with Mix 106.1, both Vince and Hunter wanted to kick him out of the company in 2002 and 2003. Dramatically,  a third member of the McMahon Family saw something in him and that was Stephney McMahon.
